7 Illinois Wedding Venues Nobody Told You About
(But Every Photographer Knows)
"The most beautiful weddings we've photographed weren't at the most famous venues. They were at the ones nobody expected."
We've shot weddings all over Illinois. We know which venues make images come alive — and we keep getting asked the same question: "Where should we actually get married?" This is our honest answer. Every observation below comes from experience on the ground, not a Google search.
Hidden Gems Within an Hour
A beautifully restored 1890 warehouse in downtown Elgin. Exposed brick, dramatic chandeliers, original hardwood floors, and 12,000 sq ft across multiple levels — including a heated rooftop deck. They book one event per day, so the entire building is yours from start to finish.
Oversized warehouse windows pull late afternoon light straight across the main floor. The brick walls work as a natural diffuser — warm, even light with no harsh shadows. That rooftop at golden hour is something we genuinely look forward to every time.
A 19-room Georgian manor on 780 acres of DuPage County Forest Preserve. Seven distinct ceremony locations — rose garden, magnolia garden, oak garden, front mansion, and more. Their all-weather atrium has three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. Managed by the Forest Preserve District, pricing is genuinely surprising for what you get.
Protected prairie land around the estate gives us open landscape framing impossible inside the city. Seven ceremony locations means we never shoot the same composition twice. Fall colors here are spectacular — book October dates early.
Set on dramatic glacial terrain in Lemont — rolling ravines and hills that feel nothing like suburban Chicago. The ballroom has full panoramic windows overlooking the course, and the outdoor ceremony space uses the natural landscape as a backdrop that stretches for miles. Don't let "golf club" make you think generic. It's anything but.
The back terrace at sunset over the ravines is one of the better golden-hour backdrops within 40 minutes of the city — no contest. Glacial terrain creates natural depth and layers in wide shots that flat suburban venues simply cannot replicate.
"The venue you choose sets the tone for every single image from your wedding day. Choose a space that photographs like it means something."— Love & Moore Photography & Video
Suburban and rural venues almost always offer something Chicago venues can't: space. Wide open grounds mean we can place you inside the landscape — not just in front of a backdrop. If editorial, cinematic images matter to you, a venue outside the city is worth a serious look.
Worth the Drive
Perched above Lake Galena in the rugged Driftless Area — forested bluffs, misty lake mornings, and fall foliage that rivals New England. Full resort means guests stay on-site and the wedding becomes a weekend. This is a destination wedding without leaving Illinois.
The point patio overlooking the lake at golden hour is one of those backdrops you can't manufacture. We've photographed here in every season — fall is otherworldly, but even winter fog over the lake produces images that look like editorial spreads.
A National Historic Landmark built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The Great Hall has massive stone fireplaces and hand-hewn timber beams that no modern venue can replicate. Ceremonies at the Sunrise Shelter back up against the wooded canyon walls of Starved Rock State Park.
Canyon light at Starved Rock is unlike anything else in Illinois — dappled, directional, dramatic. Fall is the obvious choice but we've shot stunning winter weddings here too. The stone fireplace reception photos look like they belong in a luxury travel magazine.
1,700 acres of curated botanical landscape — and remarkably few couples know you can get married here. Three distinct venue spaces: the lakeside Firefly Pavilion, the intimate Fragrance Garden, and the Ginkgo Room's clean modern architecture. The grounds transform completely with each season.
Spring blossoms, summer canopy, autumn color, winter sculpture — this is the only venue in Illinois where the season itself is a main character in your photos. Book a spring or fall date and plan portrait time on the arboretum grounds before or after the reception.
Right in the heart of Galena's historic Main Street — cobblestone, 19th-century storefronts, brick and iron everywhere. The event space is boutique and intimate. But what's outside the door is extraordinary: after your reception, the whole town is your portrait location. Pairs perfectly with Eagle Ridge for a full Galena weekend.
Downtown Galena is one of the most cinematically rich portrait environments in the state — the kind of location that makes every frame look like a period film. We build in an hour of downtown portraits for every Galena wedding we shoot. It is always worth it.

Is a Hidden Gem Venue Right for You?
Your guests are up for an experience
Venues more than an hour out work best when your guest list is excited to make a weekend of it. If your crowd loves an adventure, somewhere like Starved Rock or Eagle Ridge becomes the thing they talk about for years — not just the wedding they attended.
The images matter more than the convenience
Unconventional venues almost always photograph better. When your ceremony is set against wooded bluffs or a historic stone lodge rather than a generic ballroom, the images are simply more striking. If the visual memory of your day matters, look beyond the obvious.
You're willing to do a bit more legwork
Hidden gem venues sometimes need more coordination — vendors who know the location, accommodation blocks, transportation. It's not harder, just different. The couples who thrive here tend to see the extra effort as part of what makes their day uniquely theirs.
You want your venue to say something about you
The weddings that feel most "them" are almost always at venues that required a little more searching. When the space genuinely reflects who you are — not just what's popular on Pinterest — that energy shows up in every photo and every frame of footage.
