How to Choose a Wedding Photographer (Without Losing Your Mind)

There are a lot of wedding photographers out there. Some are incredible. Some will disappear with your deposit. Most are somewhere in between. Choosing one is genuinely overwhelming — especially when every website looks great and everyone claims to be "passionate about love." So let's cut through it.

1. Look at Full Galleries, Not Just Highlight Images

Every photographer has a best-of portfolio. The real question is: what does a full wedding day look like in their hands? Ask to see a complete gallery from one wedding — ceremony through reception. Consistency matters more than one stunning shot.

2. Their Style Should Match How You Want to Feel in 10 Years

Photography styles fall on a spectrum from heavily edited and dramatic to light and airy to dark and moody to true-to-life. None is wrong. But think about what you'll actually want to look at in a decade. Trendy filters fade. Honest, well-exposed moments don't.

3. Personality Matters More Than Most People Think

You'll spend your entire wedding day with this person. If you feel awkward or pressured around them in a 20-minute consultation call, that feeling doesn't go away on your wedding day. The best photographers make you forget the camera exists. Pay attention to how you feel in the conversation, not just how the portfolio looks.

4. Read the Contract Before You Sign Anything

Understand what you're actually getting. Delivery timelines, what happens if they're sick, who owns the images, cancellation policy. A professional photographer will have a clear, fair contract. No contract at all is a red flag.

5. Price Is a Data Point, Not the Deciding Factor

The cheapest option isn't always a mistake, and the most expensive isn't always worth it. What matters is whether the value — the experience, the quality, the peace of mind — matches the cost. A photographer who charges $3,000 and makes you feel completely taken care of is often a better investment than one who charges $800 and leaves you anxious.
