What to Wear for Engagement Photos (Without Overthinking It)

Engagement photo outfits

Engagement photos stress people out more than they should. The questions start immediately: Do we match? Do we coordinate? Should we bring multiple outfits? What about colors? Here's the honest answer: most of it matters less than you think.

The One Rule That Actually Matters

Wear something you feel comfortable in. Not uncomfortable-in-a-great-way. Actually comfortable. If you spend the whole session tugging at your dress or readjusting your collar, it shows in the photos. Confidence reads on camera more than any specific outfit choice.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Identical outfits read as costumes. The goal is to look like two people who belong together, not two people who called each other that morning. Pick a color palette — earthy tones, neutrals, jewel tones — and work within it. You don't need to be wearing the same shade of anything.

"Wear what makes you feel like yourself. That's what photographs best."

Avoid Loud Patterns and Text

Big logos, graphic tees, and loud prints pull the eye away from you. The camera is looking at your faces. Let the faces be the loudest thing in the frame.

Don't Buy Something New Just for the Session

Unless you want to. But wearing something you already own and already feel good in usually produces better results than breaking in a brand new outfit the day of the shoot. When in doubt, send us a photo of what you're thinking. We're happy to give feedback before your session.
